Our Partners & Sponsors
Our history, values and commitment to the Canterbury community
Canterbury Cougars Rugby League Club was founded in 1985 by a group of dedicated rugby enthusiasts in the heart of Kent. What started as a small community initiative with just 15 players has grown into one of the region's most respected sporting institutions.
Over four decades, the club has produced numerous representative players, won 12 league titles, and established one of the largest junior development programmes in the South East of England. Our home ground at Richardson Park has been a fortress since 1992, providing a venue for both competitive fixtures and community events.
We exist to promote rugby league in the Canterbury district, foster community spirit, and develop players of all ages and abilities. We believe sport has the power to bring people together, build character, and create lasting friendships.
The club operates across multiple levels:
The club is governed by a volunteer committee elected annually at the AGM. Current office holders include Chairman David Hartley, Secretary Anne Bristow, Treasurer Paul McKinnon, and Head Coach Marcus Webb. The committee meets monthly at the clubhouse.
Richardson Park features two full-sized pitches, a training area, clubhouse with bar and function room, changing facilities, and a spectator stand seating 200. The clubhouse is available for private hire and hosts regular community events throughout the year.
Canterbury Cougars are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. All coaches and volunteers undergo DBS checks and complete safeguarding training. Our Safeguarding Officer, Jenny Marshall, can be contacted at safeguarding@canterburycougars.com for any concerns.

The latest from Canterbury Cougars
The squad returned for pre-season this week with new head coach Marcus Webb leading the sessions. The focus has been on fitness and defensive structures ahead of the opener against Ashford.
Canterbury have strengthened with the signings of halfback Jack Ellis from Medway, prop Rhys Thornton from Ashford, and winger Sam Keane from Thanet. All three bring valuable experience.
Over 60 young players attended our registration day last Saturday. We now have full squads across all junior age groups, with waiting lists for Under-9s and Under-11s.
Thanks to a Sport England grant and generous donations from our members, the Richardson Park clubhouse has been fully refurbished with new kitchen facilities and an accessible entrance.
Experienced forward Claire Ashworth has been named captain of the women's team for the upcoming season. Claire, 27, joined the club in 2019 and has been a standout performer.
Our annual black-tie dinner will be held on 14 March at the Canterbury Hotel. Guest speaker TBA. Tables of 10 are £450. Contact the clubhouse to book.
